If you're a fan of cream cakes, then this is the recipe for you! Malai Custard Cake is a delicious Indian dessert that will have your mouth watering just by looking at it. It's easy to make and requires no baking.


For sugar syrup
  • 500ml water
  • 250gm sugar
  • Few saffron strands
For custard
  • 1ltr milk
  • 250gm sugar
  • 2tbsp custard powder
  • 2½ tbsp cornflour
  • 600gm rusk biscuit
  • 2tbsp fresh cream
  • Slivered almonds
  • diced cashews
  • Slivered pistachios


Method for sugar syrup
  1. Place a pan on high heat and pour 500 ml water in it. 
  2. Add 250 gm sugar and boil the mixture for 5 mins, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Add few strands of saffron and keep stirring until it turns into a syrup. 
  4. Remove the pan from the heat and keep aside for cooling.
Method for custard
  1. Place a pan on medium-high flame and pour 900 ml milk in it. Add 250gm sugar and boil to a bring,  stirring occasionally  until sugar dissolves.
  2. In a bowl, take 100 ml milk and add 2 tbsp custard powder and  2 ½ tbsp cornflour. Mix well, making sure that there are no lumps.
  3. Add the custard mixture to the milk in batches. Mix well and stir continuously.
  4. When the mixture starts to become thick, add cream in it. Mix well and turn off the heat.
  1. In a glass bowl, make a layer of rusk at the bottom. Pour some sugar syrup on the rusk and add a layer of custard mixture on top of rusks.
  2. Repeat with another layer of rusk soaked with sugar syrup and custard mixture on top.
  3. Garnish with almonds, cashews and pistachios.
  4. Place the bowl in a refrigerator for 3 to 4 hours to allow the custard to set. When the custard is set, cut the cake into pieces and serve!


  • Make sure that sugar is dissolved completely for sugar syrup and custard.
  • Make sure that the custard powder and cornflour and dissolved completely in the milk and don't form a lump.
